build your credit

Building your credit can be a simple process that will help you financially in the longterm. It allows you to more easily be approved for loans and credit cards with lower interest rates and favorable terms. Credit scores range from poor, with a score of 300, up to excellent, with a score of 850. You can use sites like freecreditreport.com or creditkarma.com to see where you stand. These sites conduct "soft" checks that won't affect your credit score. "Hard" checks can affect your score and are typically conducted by lending and/or credit agencies when applying for a loan. For example, if you're in the process of applying for a mortgage be sure not to open any lines of credit!

Some easy ways to build your credit?

  1. Pay off your monthly credit card bills, in full and on time

  2. Ask for higher credit limits and only spend ~30% credit utilization max

  3. Get items that you normally pay on time (like rent, utilities, even Netflix payments!) onto your credit report through Perch, Experian Boost, UltraFICO

  4. Consider debt consolidation to keep track of outstanding debt

renter's insurance

We require our tenants to have renter's insurance. Make sure your personal property is protected and do some research to discover which policy is best for you and your family. Most companies also offer bundles if you already have auto insurance with them for instance.
